Caress of the Gaze

Since the topic this week is surveillance, and because some of the readings (Browne and Gaboury) touch on the affective responses of those who are consistently subject to surveillance, I wanted to share this project (by one of the brilliant MA+P PhD candidantes!) that I recently became aware of: http://behnazfarahi.com/caress-of-the-gaze/.

Farahi's work is a 3D-printed dress that registers the gaze, and is activated and reshaped by it. I think this work is a beautiful visualization of the affective response to the gaze, and how our bodies are affected by it.

  1. I think this would also function as an example of "souveillance" in the way it is presented here: as a way to track and respond to the male gaze. But we could also imagine this technology being implemented from the top-down. For example, police gear which analyzes "criminal" responses and shifts its makeup accordingly.
